“In January 2012, I was attacked and stabbed 32 times by an abusive ex-boyfriend I met in high school. I flat-lined 4 times in the ER, received 12 units of blood, and suffered a stroke in my cerebellum. I also had a fractured skull and nose, lost two teeth, had right facial paralysis and a stabbed larynx, and was severely beaten. It’s a miracle I survived and it’s a miracle I’m alive today. Because of that, I decided to dedicate my life to speaking out about domestic violence and ended up giving my first keynote speech about a year later. During it, I was surprised by the team of EMTs that rescued me that night – one of them was named Cameron. He was the one who set up the helicopter landing and carried me into it. He was the one who saved my life. After my speech, Cameron invited my mom and I to dinner at the fire house so I could spend time with him and the rest of my heroes.
